Sustainability
  • YY Nation super fine merino wool is ethically grown, certified, and traceable from New Zealand growers. The merino sheep live in the high country of New Zealand’s South Island on a free range farm and come down for a haircut once a year.
  • YY Nation Bamboo is certified by OEKO – TEK ® using sustainable and ethical growers. -YY soles are made from nature using natural bio-based materials like Algae or Sugarcane that don’t emit harmful oil based chemicals into the environment like most other shoes.
  • Cactus Leather is a highly sustainable plant based material offering an alternative to traditional leather, without any toxic chemicals, phthalates and PVC. The result is partially biodegradable and has the technical specifications required by the fashion, leather goods, luxury packaging and furniture industries.
  • Using pineapple husk waste as leather accents reduces harmful CO2 emission caused from burning off this waste material, turning waste into wonder
  • There’s less need for transportation as many of the raw materials are made into YY Nation’s unique shoe components within 65 miles (100km) of our manufacturing home base.
  • Small carbon footprint: the YY Nation supply chain has been designed and developed to minimize the YY Nation carbon footprint. YY Nation CO2e emissions are 42% to 61% lower than conventional sneaker emissions. -It gets better. YY Nation sneakers are Zero Carbon certified. Whatever YY Nation removes from the environment, we put it back in by planting indigenous forests to restore the natural wonder for future generations and animals to enjoy. It’s the YY Nation way.

About YY Nation

It all started with blue flecks in the sand.

The idea for YY Nation was born on a beach in Maui, Hawai'i in 2018. YY Nation's founder, Jeremy, was visiting Maui from New Zealand with his family two decades after his last visit.

While on his favorite surf beach his 9 year old daughter noticed little blue flecks in the sand. On closer inspection, he realized the flecks were microplastic waste. He was devastated by the amount of plastic waste, including old shoes that were washed up and littering the beautiful pristine beaches on Islands in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. He asked the question WHY is all this pollution happening, and WHY does it have to be this way?

"I want the beach to be pristine as it was when I first visited Maui 20 years earlier so my children and their children can enjoy nature as I have."

At that moment Jeremy decided to put his shoe-making talents towards creating shoes that would leave a good environmental footprint. This was the birth of YY NATION.

He told his story to a good mate Darryl who had visited the same beach with Jeremy to windsurf 20 years earlier. Since then, they have been on a journey to make the world's most sustainable shoes.

Who is part of the Nation?

We look to ensure that ethical decisions throughout the YY supply chain are fair.
We are very careful and selective in working with suppliers who hold the same values as YY Nation, who treat their people well, and pay a good fair wage to improve their life and the life of their communities.

Zero Carbon Certified

YY Nation is a Zero Carbon Certified brand by Ekos ™.

This means that any CO2 emissions our shoes release into the atmosphere is balanced by removing an equivalent amount of CO2 emissions.

Find out more here:

To do this, YY Nation commissioned an independent company thinkstep-anz to research and calculate YY Nation’s carbon footprint for the activities in making each shoe and then calculating the total emissions created through there life, and in their afterlife!   thinkstep-anz is accredited with using ISO standards in measuring the carbon footprints of products. Their work is regularly scrutinized by the likes of B-Corp, United Nations Global Compact, Climate Leaders Coalition, Science Based Targets and Ekos, meeting some of the most stringent standards. Further, YY Nation requested that Ekos, independent of Thinkstep, review and verify the analysis carried out by thinkstep-anz. YY Nation is utilizing Ekoss services, partnering with landowners to develop projects that grow and protect indigenous forests for future generations and natural wildlife to enjoy. Although we are just starting our journey to becoming the most sustainable shoe brand in the world, launching with a Zero Carbon footprint was essential. But Zero Carbon is just the beginning. We’re determined to become a climate positive company, having a net positive impact on the planet. Our goal is to put more back than we take out.

Committed to Circularity

Circularity is the idea of everything we do leading back to the start.

At YY Nation, we are taking responsibility for the impact of our products from creation all the way to disposal.

Basically, we’re trying to prevent your shoes from going to the landfill.

Find out more here:

Currently, the majority of the wool, bamboo, and pineapple leather accents break down naturally in the environment. Our goal is to be a truly circular system. We are committed to four programs which are;

  • Removing waste: we do this through the processes such as designing shoes to minimize waste, carefully developing and picking the materials used.
  • Collecting shoes back: our shoe boxes are designed to be repurposed as shipping boxes so you don’t need to source an additional box or plastic courier bag should you need to return/exchange your shoes.
  • Upcycling good shoes: We are currently developing an option to take back pre-loved shoes, that will be restored to resell, or gifted to those in need, as we know the most sustainable shoes are the ones you don’t have to make.
  • Recycling worn shoes: when refurbishing shoes is not an option, we aim to recycle old YY Nation shoes into materials used to make other consumer products. We are currently using sole offcuts in flooring.

But this is just the start :)

We Werent Born Yesterday

We're getting "sustainability blah blah blah" fatigue, aren't you?

“Sustainability” is becoming a buzzword. And "Blah blah blah"? Well, Greta said it ;)

Find out more here:

Companies are using this word to distract us from how they are harming the planet. It’s pretty yuck and we see straight through it. We are interested in genuine, impactful change. Whilst we’re still figuring out our exact relationship with the word “sustainability”, we can confidently say we put nature at the forefront of everything we do, not at the mercy of it..
